Can He Do It?

All right, raise your hand if you didn't know I was referring to Tiger Woods. I still don't have a tv that gets a signal, but thanks to Steve Elling, Pat Forde, and Jason Sobel (as well as Brian Hewitt), the excitement emanating from Torrey Pines is palpable. Tiger's miracle comeback finishes this Friday and Saturday have to rank among the most impressive in the history of golf. If either had happened on a Sunday, it would rank with Nicklaus's closing 9 at the 1986 Masters.

As it is, I have to find a way to watch the Open tonight. Not only does Tiger face a great challenger in Lee Westwood, but also, given the state of his knee, the Sunday set-up of the course, and the way scores have been careening around all week, literally anything can happen. By which I mean that everyone at or under par can falter and someone 5-10 shots back can take the tournament away from them. You know, try to match Ya Ni Tseng (although the rookie denied 2 LPGA legends a major)....

Speaking of Ya Ni, I wonder if she's still working the tournament for Dottie Pepper. What a week of golf this is shaping up to be, eh? A Momoko Ueda-Shiho Oyama showdown on the JLPGA, a possible clash between the KLPGA's, JLPGA's, and LPGA's best in Korea, a possible M.J. Hur-Vicky Hurst battle in the Futures Tour's major, and an LET shootout to set up Tiger's attempt to extend to 14 his winning streak with a 54-hole lead in majors? Priceless!

talk about mind over all other matters out there in the wind and abyss of putting that stupidly little white ball just where it needs to go:

Down to his last stroke, Woods holed a 12-foot birdie putt that curled into the right side of the cup on the 18th hole to force a playoff with Rocco Mediate, who could only watch on TV as Woods delivered another epic moment in an Open loaded with them.
