Tony Jesselli's LPGA "Stats & Facts," Vol 2

I am back from my 10-day trip to Colorado Springs, where I think I spent as much time in the "Trophy Club Tent" keeping dry from the many rain delays as I did on the course. First, I must congratulate So Yeon Ryu for coming out on top during this grueling week of golf.

I spent most of my time following Paula Creamer who played 66 holes in 2 of her days on the course and 6 holes on the other 2 days she played.

Also I would like to give a big congrats to Ryann O'Toole. During the first 3 days of practice rounds and the first day or two of real play, the crowd would point to her and say, "That is the girl from the Big Break TV Show," by Saturday everyone pointed to her and said, "That is Ryann O'Toole." She seems to have the look, the charisma, and the game to be a fan and sponsor favorite.

Let's get on with the stats:

The Titleholders Championship:

Qualifying this week were So Yeon Ryu, Hee Kyung Seo, and Inbee Park. Ryu is not an LPGA member and I was surprised to see she qualified for this event as earlier this season a non-LPGA member finished in the top 3 and didn't qualify. I called the commissioner's office and was told that had she finished in second or third place, she would not have qualified, but the rules stipulate that a non-member would qualify if they were victorious, which she was. Katherine Hull now is the highest-ranked player on the "priority list" yet to qualify.

Players with most top 5 finishes this year:

Cristie Kerr 8
Yani Tseng 8
Paula Creamer 5
Suzann Pettersen 5
I.K. Kim 5

Louise Friberg watch:

Ms. Friberg did not qualify for the U.S. Open. Her consecutive missed cut streak remains at 9.

Players on the verge of taking Ms. Friberg's headline away from her:

Na On Min - Has now missed 8 consecutive cuts.
Giulia Sergas - Missed 7 in a row.
Birdie Kim - Missed 7 in a row.
Allison Hanna - 6 misses in a row
Sara Brown - 6 consecutive misses.
Molly Frankhauser - 5 missed cuts in a row
Lisa Meldrum - 5 straight missed cuts.
Pernilla Lindberg - Also 5 consecutive misses.
Dina Ammaccapane - 5 in a row.

Dishonorable Mention goes to:

Ji Young Oh - 6 MC and a T54 in 7 played.
Cristina Song - 5 MC and a 77th in 6 played.
Angela Oh - 5 MC and a T47 in her last 6.

Tidbits:

Mika Miyazato is the only player to finish in the top 10 in all three major championships.

I.K. Kim and Suzann Pettersen remain the only 2 players to finish in the top 20 in every event they have played in this season. They have both teed it up 9 times.

Cristie Kerr has now finished 2nd, T2, 2nd, T3, and 3rd in her last 5 events.

Rolex Moves of the Week:

Ryann O'Toole - From #172 to #121
So Yeon Ryu - From #40 to #21
Hee Kyung Seo - From #30 to #20

Rookie Of the Year race:

Hee Kyung Seo - 393 points (10 Tournaments)
Ryann O'Toole - 139 points (5)
Christel Boeljon - 116 points (4)
Jennifer Song - 109 points (8)
Jessica Korda - 79 points (9)

Hard-to-believe stat of the week:

Paula Creamer led the U.S. Women's Open Championship in Greens in Regulation but finished 69th in putting. She finished 9 strokes back of the co-leaders, but her 135 putts were 14 more than the winner and 20 more than the runner-up.

Once again, really good stats, Tony. Glad the USWO was good, if wet. I knew you would be happy with Ryann's play, good for her getting an invite to next year wrapped up . Just a couple weeks at home before your next trip? You are a lucky pair, you two. How long will Dave loop for Vicky? Not your average sight, is it? Be seeing you soon enough. :-)
