Crystal Geyser Ladies Friday: Iijima Leads, Yokomine Lurks

The question every golfer on the JLPGA must be asking herself every week is, "Where's Sakura?" Even after closing out her round with an eagle and 2 birdies over her last 4 holes to take the lead in the first round of the Crystal Geyser Ladies, Akane Iijima must have been one of those golfers. For just two groups behind her, Sakura Yokomine was making a charge of her own, finishing birdie-eagle to pull within 2 strokes of the lead. Last week's winner Tamie Durdin made a late eagle of her own to join the lead chase pack, but at its head was Chie Arimura, who birdied 3 of her last 4 holes to get to within 1 of Iijima.

Here are the top 10 and notables:

1st/-6 Akane Iijima (66)
2nd/-5 Chie Arimura (67)
T3/-4 Sakura Yokomine, Yuko Saitoh, Mie Nakata (68)
T6/-3 Tamie Durdin, Ah-Reum Hwang, Bo-Bae Song, Natsu Nagai (69)
T10/-2 Yuko Mitsuka, Mi-Jeong Jeon, Miho Koga, Shinobu Moromizato, Ji-Woo Lee, Michiko Hattori, Keiko Sasaki (70)

T17/-1 Yuri Fudoh, Midori Yoneyama (71)
T25/E Momoko Ueda, Erina Hara, Hyun-Ju Shin, Miki Saiki, Hiromi Mogi, Yukari Baba, Yun-Jye Wei (72)
T39/+1 Maiko Wakabayashi, Esther Lee, Kumiko Kaneda, Rikako Morita (73)
T52/+2 Hiroko Yamaguchi, Li-Ying Ye (74)
T63/+3 Woo-Soon Ko, Kaori Higo, Ritsuko Ryu (75)
T79/+4 Saiki Fujita (76)
T87/+5 Rui Kitada, Eun-A Lim (77)
T95/+6 Na Zhang (78)
T98/+7 Sakurako Mori (79)

Nice to see Momo-chan putting together a solid round after having her wisdom teeth removed. There are a lot of great LPGA players between her and Iijima, though. She'll need to build on the momentum from her 2 consecutive closing birdies tomorrow to get into contention.

TEEING IT UP WITH CHARLES BARKLEY
-
It's a beautiful morning, the sun is at your back and you're striping ball after ball out to the 250 yard sign. Soon you'll be on the first tee box and, man, are you ready.
-
Right next to you, Charles Barkley is laughing as he hits another driver twenty five yards past your ball.
-
"Don't want to ruin your confidence, he says, I'll start hitting my 3-Wood".
-
"Who introduced Charles to Over The Top Golf? you ask yourself. Life was so much more pleasant when I was making fun of him and not the other way around."
-
The voice on the loudspeaker jolts you back to reality. "Next on the tee, the Barkley, Woods twosome."
-
As you hear Charles say "Let's go, Tiger, we're up...." you are thinking "man, this is gonna be a long day....."
