Cho Kawaii!!

OK, Tiger's win on the 91st hole of the U.S. Open over Rocco Mediate was what it was and I'll let better writers than me try to define it, but my favorite moment of the tournament came right after it was over. Having subjected my two girls to several hours of USOpen.com's streaming video coverage of the playoff, I was particularly struck by Sam's reaction to Tiger's attempted parental handoff before the start of the awards ceremony. Sam's reachback--and the look on Tiger's face as he held her for a few seconds before giving her back to Elin--was such a classic daughter-daddy back-and-forth. I'm glad Costas gave Tiger a chance to talk about Sam at the end of the interview.

Imoto was glued to the NHK kids tv video that I had resorted to after about the 10th time she tried to stuff a DVD in the videotape slot, but I was able to get onechan to tear her eyes away from Pants Pankuro long enough to take a look at "the baby." She liked Sam's outfit, but otherwise had a pretty dry reaction. Maybe if I can find the moment I just described on Youtube, both girls will get more interested. Maybe.

[Update 1 (6/18/08, 2:39 am): The Boston Globe got in nice 2nd-paragraph and 2nd-to-last-paragraph mentions of this moment--and a nice photo of Tiger and Sam. Almost as nice is this photo, but it still doesn't capture the exact moment I wrote about.]

[Update 2 (2:44 am): More pics. And a cool post from Jennifer at Mixed Race America, who reminds me to wish Sam a happy birthday!]

[Update 3 (11:37 pm): Here it is--about a minute and a half in....

Ain't teh intertubes grand?]

Tiger for VP! The way his knee is feeling, he may have a lot of time on his hands this summer and fall....

No, he will: he's out for the season. Yikes! ACL and stress fractures, but long-term prognosis is good.
