Saiki Fujita opened the JLPGA's first major of 2013, the Salonpas Cup, with a 31 and extended her bogey-free streak to 15 holes before bogeying 2 of her last 3 to fall back to -4 on her day. Going out in the afternoon wave, So Yeon Ryu lead the non-JLPGA members with 6 birdies in her last 10 holes to join Fujita in 1st with a 68 of her own.
Only 1 shot behind them were money-list leader Miki Saiki, Erina Hara, and a pair of relatively unheralded 20-year-olds, Mami Fukuda and Phoebe Yao. Much more recognizable were Morgan Pressel at -2, Rikako Morita at -1, and Yuri Fudoh, Lydia Ko, Shanshan Feng, Mika Miyazato, and Mi-Jeong Jeon at E. Other big names didn't shoot themselves out of the tournament, but still have some ground to make up over the remaining 54 holes, like Ayako Uehara, Sakura Yokomine, Sun-Ju Ahn, Bo-Mee Lee, Teresa Lu, Hyun-Ju Shin, and Jin Joo Hong at +1, as well as Shinobu Moromizato, Soo-Yun Kang, and Tamie Durdin at +2. Still others will be fighting to make the cut tomorrow, such as world #1 Inbee Park, Ha-Neul Kim, Ritsuko Ryu, Yuko Mitsuka at +3, Bo-Bae Song at +4, Ji-Hee Lee, Shiho Oyama, and Minjee Lee at +5, and Young Kim at +7.

OMG! 18-Year-Old "Screen Golf" Champion Qualifies for KLPGA Event!
You have to follow the following comment thread over at Seoul Sisters.com! It's easy to overlook at first--ho-hum, another teenage future star coming out of South Korea, right? But wait! This teenager is famous for being the leading money-winner on the Women's G-Tour, a professional tour in South Korea played entirely on virtual golf machines.

Kingsmill Championship Sunday: Kerr Prevails in Playoff over Pettersen in Potential Solheim Cup Preview
Suzann Pettersen fired a bogey-free 67 today to catch Cristie Kerr in regulation at the Kingsmill Championship, but the American star beat the European star by parring the 18th hole twice in a row in the playoff. (In fact, Kerr had needed to birdie the 15th and 16th to catch Pettersen, who had made 3 birdies in her 1st 6 holes on the back to briefly take the lead. When both players parred 17 and 18, the match went into overtime. See the LPGA's twitter feed for the play-by-play.)
17-year-old Ariya Jutanugarn, who led after 18 and 36 holes, caught fire on the back 9, shooting a bogey-free 30 to tie Ilhee Lee for 3rd at -10. Gerina Piller matched Jutanugarn's 66 for the low round of the day and get to -4 for the week, which was good enough for her 3rd top 10 on the season. Stacy Lewis and Angela Stanford notched top 5s of their own by finishing 1 shot behind Jutanugarn and Lee, while world #1 Inbee Park would have joined them had she avoided a walkoff bogey that left her with a 67. Rounding out the top 10 were So Yeon Ryu (68, -5), Anna Nordqvist (68, -4), and Sandra Gal (70, -4). The only other really good round of the day came from Hee Kyung Seo, whose bogey-free 67 snuck her into the top 20. Defending champion Ji-Yai Shin got a moral victory with a 69 to close out her week, while Paula Creamer, who lost to her in a playoff last year, did her one better today with a 4-birdie 68 that got her into T12 with Na Yeon Choi, Amy Yang, Caroline Hedwall, and Katie Burnett.
It wasn't such a great day for many other players. Moriya Jutanugarn shot a 74 to drop to +3 for the week, but Chie Arimura ended up 2 shots behind her (as did Ai Miyazato, who went an uncharacteristic 76-75 on the weekend), so Jutanugarn's lead in the Rookie of the Year race was endangered this week. Lizette Salas's 74 was the worst score of anyone who finished in the top 20, but Mo Martin and Jenny Shin dropped out of the top 20 with the same score and Dewi Claire Schreefel, who opened the week with a 67, ended it 10 shots worse (and that wasn't even her worst score of the week).
Kerr has now won 3 times at Kingsmill and 16 times in her LPGA career. For the sake of the American side in the Solheim Cup, let's hope this is the start of a hot streak for Kerr, because Stacy Lewis can't win the event by herself and Salas, Creamer, Korda, and Stanford are playing solid and sometimes very good golf, but haven't been able to close the deal just yet this season. Meanwhile, Pettersen is clearly Team Euro's leader, but Swedes Nordqvist and Hedwall are both starting to play some solid golf, and the Spanish Armada of Munoz, Recari, and Ciganda is going to be tough to beat, while Karine Icher, Guilia Sergas, and Sandra Gal will likely be pretty tough, as well. It's a long time before the teams are finalized, but right now the advantage is definitely with the Euros. For now, though, let's celebrate Cristie Kerr's great win. Oh, and we should take note that she did it by putting at a world-class level--Kerr needed only 105 putts over 72 holes this week, 3 fewer than Inbee Park, who's been a magician on the greens this season. Way to go, Cristie!

CyberAgent Ladies Overview: Sakura Yokomine Wins for 1st Time in 2 Years
Sakura Yokomine chased down Mi-Jeong Jeon over the final 9 holes of the CyberAgent Ladies today in Chiba to return to the winner's circle on the JLPGA for the 1st time since the 2011 season. Yokomine's 19th career victory on tour didn't come easy. Jeon, who was the leading money winner last season, when she won 5 times and earned over 130 million yen, had fired an 8-birdie 65 in the 2nd round to take a 2-shot lead on Yokomine, and held it over the front 9. But when Yokomine birdied 10 and Jeon bogeyed it, they were tied at -9. The next 4 holes decided the tournament, as Yokomine bounced back from a bogey on 11 with 2 straight birdies to take a 1-shot lead, then saw it extended to 3 shots when Jeon double bogeyed the 360-yard par-4 14th. Yokomine then cruised to a 2-shot victory over Jeon, Maiko Wakabayashi, Yuki Sakurai, and Natsuka Hori.
Of the trio, only Wakabayashi had a real chance to join the duel at the top on the back 9, but she stalled out with 2 bogeys in her 1st 5 holes on that side. Others who put themselves in good position to contend, Jin-Joo Hong, Harukyo Nomura, and Erina Hara, had even worse final 9s (37, 38, and 40, respectively). It was good to see LPGA rookie Ayako Uehara make it into the top 10 for the 1st time all season, but 3 straight 70s left her 4 behind Yokomine when the smoke cleared.
With money-list leader Miki Saiki taking the week off after winning in both of the previous 2 weeks, and former leader Rikako Morita finishing within the top 15 today, there wasn't a whole lot of movement on the JLPGA money list. But it's looking like the Yokomine-Jeon rivalry is heating up in 2013!

Inbee Park, Shanshan Feng, Mika Miyazato, and Morgan Pressel will be joining the JLPGA's finest, along with Lydia Ko and Minjee Lee, but neither Ai Miyazato nor Chie Arimura will be playing, or, for that matter, Ji-Yai Shin or Na Yeon Choi or Ya Ni Tseng, who have played in JLPGA majors and other big events before. But the KLPGA's Ha-Neul Kim will be there. Should be super-cool!

Others who put themselves in good position to contend, Jin-Joo Hong, Harukyo Nomura, and Erina Hara, had even worse final 9s (37, 38, and 40, respectively). It was good to see LPGA rookie Ayako Uehara make it into the top 10 for the 1st time all season, but 3 straight 70s left her 4 behind Yokomine when the smoke cleared.
With money-list leader Miki Saiki taking the week off after winning in both of the previous 2 weeks, and former leader Rikako Morita finishing within the top 15 today, there wasn't a whole lot of movement on the JLPGA money list. But it's looking like the Yokomine-Jeon rivalry is heating up in 2013!

Next up is the tour's 1st major of the year, the Salonpas Cup (aka the World Ladies Championship). Inbee Park, Shanshan Feng, Mika Miyazato, and Morgan Pressel will be joining the JLPGA's finest, along with Lydia Ko and Minjee Lee, but neither Ai Miyazato nor Chie Arimura will be playing, or, for that matter, Ji-Yai Shin or Na Yeon Choi or Ya Ni Tseng, who have played in JLPGA majors and other big events before. But the KLPGA's Ha-Neul Kim will be there. Should be super-cool!
