Ayako Uehara and Junko Omote share the 1st-round lead at the Nichi-Iko Ladies Open on the strength of sizzling 66s. Uehara eagled the 519-yard par-5 9th and shot a bogey-free 32 on the back to go -6 over her last 10 holes, while Omote made 4 birdies on the front and 3 on the back, her only blemish coming on (of course) the 13th hole, a medium-length par 4.
Right behind the co-leaders are the likes of Bo-Bae Song (1 back), Yuri Fudoh, Mayu Hattori, and Hyun-Ju Shin (2 back), Hiromi Mogi and Yukari Baba (3 back), and Ji-Hee Lee, Soo-Yun Kang, Kumiko Kaneda, Akane Iijima, and Ritsuko Ryu (4 back). Not so fortunate were Miki Saiki and Sakura Yokomine, who are chasing money-list leader Sun-Ju Ahn; Saiki opened with a 72 that included 2 doubles in her last 4 holes and Yokomine with a 73 that was salvaged by 2 birdies in her last 3 holes.
