Ji-Yai Shin opened the ShopRite LPGA Classic with a 7-birdie 65 that could have been a few shots better to take a 1-shot lead on playing partner Sandra Gal, who also missed a very short par putt on the same hole Shin did (the 13th, of course). With 29 players within 5 shots of the lead--including Catriona Matthew at -3, who hit 15 greens in very tough conditions, In-Kyung Kim, who came back from a double bogey on her 2nd hole, the par-3 11th, with 5 birdies in her last 11 holes get back to -2, Cristie Kerr, who birdied 4 of her last 10 to match Kim's 69, and Karrie Webb, who had to settle for a 70 after bogeying 3 of her last 4 holes as she finished her round on the front 9--anything can happen over the weekend.
For more on the 1st round, see the overviews by LPGA.com and Ruthless Mike. As I was half asleep during Golf Channel's coverage last night, and the 2nd round is already in process, I unfortunately don't have too much to add right now, except to say that when only 69 players in a field of 150 break 75 in the 1st round, I can't wait to see how the leaders hold up today!
