Samantha Thavasa Ladies Friday: Ji-Yai Shin Shares Lead at 66

Ji-Yai Shin eagled the short par-4 13th hole in her opening round at the Samantha Thavasa Ladies to cap off a 66 that left her tied for the lead at -6 with Yumiko Yoshida, Na-Ri Lee, Misuzu Narita, and Kaori Nakamura.  Lee birdied her last 4 holes in a row, while Yoshida and Narita didn't make a bogey today.

The top of the leaderboard is bunched, as Esther Lee, Hikari Fujita, Kotono Kozuma, Yukari Nishiyama, and Hiroko Azuma are only 1 back, Hiromi Mogi, Yukari Baba, and Asako Fujimoto are 2 behind, and 16 golfers are 3 off the pace, including Shinobu Moromizato, Rui Kitada, Na-Ri Kim, Mayu Hattori, Megumi Kido, Natsuka Hori, Ayaka Watanabe, and Erika Kikuchi.  With the likes of Mi-Jeong Jeon, Ji-Hee Lee, and Erina Hara at -2, Yuri Fudoh, Rikako Morita, and Ritsuko Ryu at -1, and Akane Iijima, Young Kim, and Kaori Ohe at E, there are actually 65 golfers within 5 shots of the lead and 78 at E or better.

Not every big name in the field did well, though, as Akiko Fukushima, Momoko Ueda, Saiki Fujita, and Soo-Yun Kang are +1 and Yuko Mitsuka, Kaori Aoyama, and recent winner Yeon-Ju Jung are +4, so it'll be interesting to see if they can get it going tomorrow, when moving day and cut day are the same day.  It'll be even more interesting to see how well those who came from Royal Birkdale last week can play over the course of 54 holes this week!
