Wow! Assuming nobody in the afternoon boards the birdie train and doesn't look back (hint: 8A), Moira Dunn just put herself in position to get into contention at the Kraft Nabisco Championship over the weekend. Her bogey-free 68 today not only gets her back to E for the tournament (good enough for T23 right now), but also is the best round of everyone in the morning pairings thus far (although Hee-Won Han, Liselotte Neumann, Rachel Hetherington, Se Ri Pak, and Jee Young Lee have the best chance of surpassing it). Earlier this morning, I had predicted that a 73 would be good enough for Moira to squeak into the weekend--and it may well turn out to be on target--but who cares now? (Besides the players near the cut line and their fans, that is.) Congratulations, Moira!!
[Update 1 (3:46 pm): Yeesh, I wasn't trying to deploy the Mostly Harmless jinx on the players I named in the parenthetical remark up there, but, man, did it hit them anyway. Sorry! Although I should--or maybe I shouldn't--note that Se Ri and Maria Hjorth still have a chance to match Moira's 68....]
[Update 2 (4:22 pm): Well, nobody beat her! It's really cool to see that she caught Shiho Ohyama, Jee Young Lee, and Seon Hwa Lee, all of whom played well today, but not as great as Moira. We'll see who else ends up beneath her at E on the leaderboard in a few hours! Too bad about Ai Miyazato's 74, but she's still under par heading into the weekend of a major (-2, T8 so far). She can definitely recover from one disappointing round and still get herself in contention (barring a birdie barrage from 8A)....]
[Update 3 (4:28 pm): Correction--make that T7 for Ai-chan, who's in good company with Se Ri Pak and Liselotte Neumann so far, only 1 shot behind Hee-Won Han, (who shot a fine 69, despite the 18th-hole bogey) and 2 behind the leader in the clubhouse, Maria Hjorth.]
[Update 4 (7:33 pm): As the afternoon players finish off their rounds, it's looking more and more like Moira's will be the best of the entire day. Not too shabby!]
[Update 5 (4/5/08 8:22 am): She got it! Low round of the day. Playing with Gulbis in round 3....]
